John is a loving husband to Mary (Logue) McDermott, devoted father to Siobhan and Jack, and a cherished friend. He was recently involved in a life altering accident. On Thanksgiving Eve, John was finishing preparations for hosting extended family. He was struck by a car while leaf blowing. Fortunately, his immediate family was also at home prepping. They sprung into action and secured emergency life support at Lawrence General Hospital. LGH stabilized him and quickly transported him to Boston. John remains at Brigham and Women’s Hospital Trauma Unit where has spent the last month having endured 10 surgeries. He suffered multiple traumas and his injuries were severe, including a Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) (C7 incomplete) and multiple compound fractures in each leg. Fortunately, John did not suffer any permanent head or brain injury and he is as sharp as ever.
The long journey and prognosis in front of John is daunting, challenging and filled with uncertainty. While he is showing remarkable strength and determination, the road ahead is overwhelming. There will be astronomical medical bills, rehabilitation costs, and the need for adaptive equipment and modifications to make his home safe and accessible. Many of these expenses along with advanced rehabilitation methods and novel treatments will not be covered by insurance. According to the Christopher Reeves Foundation the average first year expenses alone attributable to Johns SCI are $750,000 in 2014 Dollars (almost a million in today’s dollars). This does not include any indirect costs such as lost wages and productivity. Those who know John well, know he is ultra competitive and filled with determination and grit. As John’s father-in law, Jim Logue, said “I would never bet against John McDermott!”. Our task at hand is to provide the best opportunity for a positive outcome.
John’s family have been his rock during this difficult time. Anyone who knows John, knows him to be the ultimate family man and a giver. He is selfless and generous, without asking for anything in return. He now finds himself in the position of needing the generosity of others. We are reaching out to you today with a humble request for your support. Any donation will go a long way in helping John receive the essential care and resources he needs in this difficult time.
